"Hernia occurs when the contents of a body cavity protrude from their normal position. They may bulge out under the skin, or slip through an opening in the tissue that normally enclose them. Hernias often take place with little or no pain. However, they are potentially dangerous since the flesh surrounding the protruding part can tighten, severing the blood supply to the herniated part.

This will result in tissue death, decay (gangrene) and pain. It may also result in obstruction of the bowel, causing vomiting, abdominal cramping and ultimately digestive collapse. The gangrene itself may also spread to become a system-wide infection.
