About Schizophrenia

People with schizophrenia have episodes that last at least six months with at least one month of active symptoms. Active symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, catatonic behavior and flat affect. These symptoms cause severe distress in their daily life activities.Schizophrenia affects a little more than 1% of the adult population. It is characterized by a wide range of symptoms involving affect, sense of self, cognition and perception. Some people have a prodromal phase before the active phase. In this phase they show deterioration in social and interpersonal function. While in the prodromal phase people show maladaptive behavior such as poor grooming, social withdraw, and unusual behavior. After the active phase there is a residual phase that is similar to the prodromal phase.
