Nithya Kriya - Diabetes
About Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of metabolic diseases in which a person's blood sugar levels remain high over an extended period of time. The classic symptoms include increased thirst, frequent urination and increased hunger. Either the pancreas is not producing enough insulin (Type 1 DM) or it is not responding to the insulin made by the body (Type 2 DM). The third type is gestational diabetes and it occurs while a woman is pregnant and then usually resolves after birth. When diabetes goes untreated, many complications can arise, some of which can be quite serious, causing stroke, kidney failure, eye damage or heart disease. Prevention and treatment of diabetes usually includes regular physical activity, healthy diet and weight, abstaining from tobacco products, blood pressure control and wearing quality
footwear. Type 1 diabetes must be managed with insulin injections, while type 2 may or may not use medication and insulin.
