About Autism

Diagnosis of Autism, a child is required to show signs by the age of three. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that exhibits displays of restricted and repetitive behavior, impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication. Autism has a strong genetic basis and it alters how the brain processes information, how it organizes and connects. Very little is really understood and it occurs 4 - 5 X more in boys than girls. Children diagnosed with autism rarely live independent lives and they often have other conditions such as anxiety disorders, sleep problems, intellectual disability and epilepsy to name a few. These additional difficult behaviors create a lot of stress on the family. Children with autism are often prescribed drugs for depression, stimulants and antipsychotics. There is very little reliable research on the effectiveness or safety of drug treatment. No known medication improves autism's core problems of communication and social impairments.
